Engaging documentary about a high school Culinary Arts teacher in NYC who is so good at her job, that she is able to help her students get scholarships to the best cooking schools in the state.
The teacher, Wilma Stephenson, holds this doc together, as she is one crazy spitfire, but you only see how the students live outside of school. I kinda wish we got to see how Wilma lives her personal life, but the story is really about how these kids rise up and cook the hell out of a risotto. Highly recommended.
Here is the blurb on Netflix:
Three Philadelphia high school students negotiate the challenges of the inner city and the demands of their tough-minded culinary arts teacher, Wilma Stephenson, to become contenders in a citywide cooking competition. Charming and surprisingly hilarious, Jennifer Grausman and Mark Becker’s inspiring documentary showcases the heights young minds can reach, regardless of their environment, when they’re expected to succeed.
