Netflix: Veronica Mars: Season 1

I missed this show when it aired on television, even though most of my friends were telling me to give it a try. I’m not sure why I never watched… probably because these were the days of Buffy and I’m not a Buffy fan. Or a fan of hour-long teen dramadies. Or things that look like this in general. So I gave this a try last week and was pleasantly surprised. It’s actually fun, smart, and well-paced. Though I think half the cast in any given episode is typical crappy TV acting fodder, the main cast really shine and take the narrative seriously…for a show that isn’t serious at all. One of the better Teenager Acting As Adults shows that I have seen in a while. It’s no Freaks And Geeks, but really, most things can not live up to that. Give it a try. Here’s the Netflix blurb:

Though Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) is only 17, she’s savvy enough to learn the ropes of crime-solving from her father (Enrico Colantoni), an ex-cop turned private eye in the sleepy town of Neptune, Calif., as she tries to track down her best friend’s murderer. No case is too daunting for Veronica, but when it comes to navigating the perils of high school — such as avoiding her ex (Teddy Dunn) — she must stumble through it all like her peers.
