Netflix: Herb & Dorothy

This one fell on my lap out of the recommendations queue on my xbox and IT’S AWESOME.

This is a documentary about Herb and Dorothy Vogel, two of America’s greatest collectors of minimalist NYC art. What I loved about this doc is its the first time I’ve seen art collecting as Art Form. Seriously. These two people have met and bought from some of the most important artists of the last 40 yrs — from Vito Acconci to Chuck Close to Marfa creator Donald Judd. I can’t recommend this one enough.

Here is the blurb from Netflix:

Chronicling the story of unlikely art collectors Herb Vogel and Dorothy Vogel, filmmaker Megumi Sasaki demonstrates that it’s not necessary to be wealthy in order to build a significant collection in this fascinating documentary. A postal clerk and a librarian, the Vogels share a passion for art, which they pursued over decades, becoming two of the most important collectors of minimalist and conceptual art with more than 4,000 pieces.
