Netflix: Heartbeeps

While I was going to school in Santa Cruz, where this movie was filmed, there was a hotel with dozens of film stills of this movie.  And that is how I first learned about this gem.

Created in 1981, when tech was both exciting (like WarGames) and scary (like WarGames), Heartbeeps bounces around in goofy robot costumes and beautiful voices. Seriously, some of America’s greatest character actors of the time star in this movie: Andy Kaufman, Bernadette Peters, and Christopher Guest.

Highly Recommended!

Here’s the blurb on Netflix:

While relegated to a factory repair shelf, ValCom 17485 (Andy Kaufman), a robot valet, and hostess robot AquaCom 89045 (Bernadette Peters) experience a connection that blossoms into love. They decide to override their programming and explore the forbidden world beyond the factory window. But soon, the police are closing in, and with a baby on the way, the digitized lovers have their robotic hands full. Allan Arkush directs.
